Tower of London Remembers
The First World War 1914 - 2014

The Tower of London & the Sea of Poppies

To mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, a new installation of nearly nine hundred thousand ceramic poppies will create a sea of red in the 16 acres of dry moat surrounding the Tower of London. During 1914, the moat was used to swear in over 1,600 men who had enlisted at the recruitment station in the City to form the Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, the so-called 'stock brokers battalion', who fought for the duration of the war. Around fifty poppies per square metre of moat will be painstakingly placed by a team of volunteers, a single poppy for each one of the War's 888,246 British and Colonial fatalities.

WWI Battlefields

WWI Battlefields

Walking among the blossom orchards, river meadows and green fields of northern France and Belgium
today, one would scarcely have any inkling of the history of these tranquil countries. But the place names
tell their own story.
The Great War is remembered as being almost uniquely terrible, a war of attrition, with huge armies dug in yards apart under relentless barrage, each offensive grinding to a halt with enormous cost.
One hundred years on, life has returned to a land once so blasted it looked like the Moon, and where nothing grew but poppies. Remembrance is everything, and we pay respectful visits to the cemeteries and the great monuments dedicated to the fallen of all sides, and view for ourselves the battlefield sites of Vimy Ridge at Arras, Pozieres, Thiepval and Beaumont Hamel on the Somme, and the fields of the Ypres Salient.
